Harmonium & Music
Music lessons are an opportunity to approach music in a holistic, creative, fun, and supportive environment. Playing music and singing has many benefits to the body, mind, and spirit and has been proven to decrease stress, ease muscle tension, deepen breathing, reduce heart rate, increase concentration, improve memory, and relieve depression amongst many other benefits. At House of Jai, you can choose to learn how to play the harmonium, sing, chant (in Sanskrit), and/or lead kirtan (devotional chanting) in a personally customized and fully integrated way. Lessons also incorporate an understanding of proper posture, breathing, healthy vocal production, and music theory.
The harmonium is a small portable organ that has a keyboard almost identical to a piano and a sound similar to an accordion. Its rich, beautiful sustained sound provides the perfect support for the voice and can be applied to a range of musical genres and styles of playing. This is a great, easy instrument for anyone to learn and the technique of playing can be applied to other keyboard instruments, like the piano or accordion. The musical knowledge gained through these lessons can also be applied to all musical endeavors.
Music lessons at House of Jai are intended for a wide range of people, whether you are a yoga instructor looking to play harmonium in class and lead chanting or whether you are someone looking to simply enjoy the experience of playing and learning about music. This is the perfect entry point into music study for those who are completely new to music and also for the advancing musician who wants to have a deeper, richer understanding of music. Students will leave lessons feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and uplifted in body, mind, and spirit.
